Ohiyesa - The Soul of an Indian

This proposal invites funding for a television documentary about one of the first Native American medical doctors in the United States, known by his Dakota name as Ohiyesa, and by his English name as Dr. Charles Alexander Eastman. He survived the Dakota War of 1862, graduated from Boston University as a physician, and was the only doctor available to the victims of Wounded Knee in 1890. The documentary follows his descendent, Katherine Beane, as she traces his story and the issues raised by his life and work.
